Sculpture Silhouettes

Sculpture Silhouettes is an illustrated catalog of a sculpture series by artist Peter Coffin. The large metal sculptures represent iconic three dimensional artworks in silhouette form that appear to slip in and out of view where they exist as viewers move among them. In transforming famous works of art into flattened silhouettes devoid of their original volume, Coffin engages the viewer to reflect and expand upon the existing associations each form’s representation evokes in space and in time. The series prompts viewers to project the present onto the past while suggesting that history is constantly being rewritten. Allusions to Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker, a Moai Easter Island head, Louise Bourgeois’ Untitled (With Hand), one of Sol LeWitt’s Incomplete Open Cubes, and Pablo Picasso’s She Goat, among others, hover like apparitions in space and time as if they’ve been rescued from deep storage, to remind us that these iconic forms are not only stored in our museums but also in our minds to shift in shape and generate new meanings. The sculptures in this series have been exhibited in New York City Hall Park and in museums and sculpture parks internationally as illustrated in the publication. Sculpture Silhouettes includes an essay by neuroscientist, Dr. Leah Kelly.
